A product may have several digital identities: a sales page, manual, traceability record, recycling instructions and sometimes a regulatory passport. Printing a separate QR code for every destination would be confusing and difficult to maintain.
GS1 Digital Link takes a different approach. It places product identifiers inside a structured Web address. The QR code becomes both a consumer entry point and a data carrier that professional systems can understand.
From a GTIN to a structured URL
A GTIN identifies a trade item. With GS1 Digital Link, that identifier can appear in a URL that follows a standard syntax. A batch, lot or serial number can be added when the use case requires it.
The benefit is not simply that the result looks like a URL. Compatible software can recognise the GS1 identifiers, while an ordinary smartphone can open the address like any other Web link.
One identity, multiple resources
The scan does not have to lead to one frozen page. A resolver can direct a request to the appropriate resource:
- consumer product information;
- instructions or a safety sheet;
- traceability data;
- recall information;
- content in the visitor’s language;
- a machine-readable interface.
The printed symbol stays the same while associated resources can evolve. This should not be confused with a vendor’s proprietary “dynamic QR code.” GS1 Digital Link is an identification and linking standard; hosting and resolution still need to be designed.
Conventional QR versus GS1 QR
A conventional QR code can contain any valid URL. It is ideal for menus, profiles, manuals and campaigns. A checkout system, however, cannot reliably infer that arbitrary text represents a GTIN unless it follows the expected syntax.
A QR Code with GS1 Digital Link contains a standardised URI. Print quality still matters, but compliance primarily depends on the data, identifier governance and the systems behind the link.
