QR Code and Data Matrix are both two-dimensional barcodes. They represent data in a grid of light and dark modules, tolerate a degree of damage and can carry more information than a linear barcode. They are not interchangeable in every project.
How can you tell them apart?
A QR Code usually has three large square position markers in its corners. Data Matrix has a solid L-shaped border plus two alternating edges. The visual difference reflects separate standards and scanning ecosystems.
QR Code is built for broad public access
Most smartphone camera apps recognise QR Codes natively. That makes the format a natural fit for URLs, menus, profiles, forms, manuals, payments and campaigns. People recognise the pattern and generally know what to do.
Popularity does not automatically make a QR Code suitable for an industrial line or retail checkout. The encoded content and syntax decide what business software can do with it.
Data Matrix performs well in small spaces
Data Matrix can remain effective in a very small area and works well for direct part marking. It is common in manufacturing, electronics and regulated environments. In healthcare, GS1 specifies GS1 DataMatrix as the 2D carrier for product identification; a QR Code should not be substituted without following sector rules.
Some phones can read Data Matrix, but consumer support is less consistent than QR Code support. If people will scan with a standard camera app, test the actual target devices.

The real question: who scans, and why?
Choose a format after answering five questions:
- Is the reader a consumer phone or a professional scanner?
- Must the symbol work at checkout?
- How much print area is available?
- Does a sector or GS1 rule apply?
- Should the code merely open a URL or transmit structured data?
For a card, poster or product page, QR Code is usually the simplest option. For a tiny component, medical product or industrial workflow, Data Matrix may be required or more efficient.
The takeaway
There is no universal winner. QR Code optimises interaction with people carrying smartphones. Data Matrix often wins where density, size and industrial constraints dominate. In a GS1 project, do not improvise the syntax: both the carrier and the data must match the applicable profile.
